an artisan of life

I work with my heart and my hands.
I appreciate other who do too.
I buy the CD, and listen to it start to finish.
I pick up the phone for a voice.
I meet face-to-face.
I hold my boyfriend’s hand.
I enjoy anything sweet.
(I mean, I realllly enjoy it…)
I turn the TV off and enjoy the silence.
I hold my camera in my hands.
I watch the light around me.
I feel the moment, let it impress upon me.
I compose it.
It’s my impression. Of you.
We laugh and smile.
It’s fun to be alive and in love.

In an instant, technological society that is starved for human touch,
I consider myself an artisan of life.

{derek + lauren} san juan capistrano

Could this Engagement Session been ANY more fun? Seriously! I felt like I was a kid again! I hadn’t been to a petting zoo since I was 10. The only thing was, I was reminded of my great fear of my fingers being devoured by a Llama. (Bad experience…nuff said)…safe to say, I stayed away from that guy.

Lauren is one of my longtime friends from our lovely little hometown, Danville. I am thrilled to be photographing her wedding this May in San Diego at The Darlington House in San Diego. Normally, I’ll shoot for 1-2 hours for most engagement sessions…but this was a marathon! We were having so much fun we just keep going…and going…and ended up sitting down at Pedro’s Taco Stand for some awesome pico de gallo and tortillas (I’m the invisible friend sitting across from them. But really, I did eat some tacos and …mmMM..) Good times.

Kerry Scott - It's been fun to see what Lauren and Derek do for their engagement photos. I'm excited to see how the wedding turns out!

Carrie - I cannot WAIT to have you take our pictures later this month! The light in these is fantastic!!

{travel} I5

These days everything is new for me…I moved to Pasadena in January and now work between two studios in Los Angeles and San Francisco… I am learning the LA world after seven years in SF….I feel like a tourist down here! I’m the dork taking pictures on the side of I5.

As I drive through the highway matrix of Southern California, Sunset Blvd, Central LA or the PCH…everything interests me. I wanted to share a fun shot I took off the side of the road the other day. Am I crazy or does this photo just make you want cotton candy really bad?? ;)

{inspiration} wafa

I just ran across these postcard collages (via Free People, thank you Julia!!) by wafa, an international artist group who focuses on collaborations.  One artist creates something and mails it to another artist to finish, adding an element of surprise and randomness that I love…

check out more of their stuff here

cynthia Beard - amazing! truly amazing!

{derek + lauren} E-I-E-I-O…

In the middle of editing an adorable engagement session from this past weekend in San Juan Capistrano…I just had to share a few! More to come ;)

cynthia Beard - adorable!

{boudoir} a tease…

Just a little “tease” if you know what I mean…. More from this sexy and fun boudoir session in a few months…. Gotta keep this on the DL!

cynthia Beard - Love these...especially the famous legs in the air pose that is such a staple of boudir poses. Amazing!

{chris + paige} pleasanton, ca

Chris and Paige win the medal for most endurance under rainclouds. Their engagement shoot was called off and on and back on again because Mr. Weatherman couldn’t keep track of WHAT the heck was happening in the sky. We waited it out all day…. and VOILA! Dry skies! (for the most part.) We even ate ice cream on a chilly winter day! Talk about funnn :)

Also, see them featured on Bird in a Cage Bride!

Joel Flory - Such great pics Sara! I love the ones at the dairy and I am so stoked that you are shooting Paige's wedding.

layla - I LOVE this. Great pictures, great models! So much love.

Kris Moxley - Paige and Chris, I so enjoyed seeing the pics, yes the day was in quesation was it raining or not and God cleared time in the day for you, stopping the rain and letting sun shine thru the clouds. love mom

Mandy Mascari - Wow, those are really cool pics. Paige you look so beautiful. You guys looked like you had fun taking the pics.

Mary McCormick-Busse - Wow...what does a mother say...I guess the most wonderful thing about photos is they never lie...and the love that you both share shines through to those who view them. I have my favorites, but they are all wonderful. I know you will remain friends throughout your lifetime. xx mom

Khara Tapia - Sara, what a wonderful shoot! These are fabulous photos.

onelove - Thanks to Paige and Chris for this shoot- I loved their style and energy!

Matt + Carrie’s wedding story:

We are getting married in my hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  He’s from Georgia, I’m from Oklahoma, but we live in Durham, North Carolina.  We’re having our wedding at The Barn in Tulsa–I love it because it’s this awesome old historic barn full of character, there are swans in the lake that’s on the property, and most of all, because 100% of the money I’m paying them goes to a local charity in Oklahoma. It’s called Brush Creek Youth Ranch, and it’s for troubled teenage boys to get back on track, so-to-speak. I LOVE it that our celebration of marriage is going to help improve the lives of others–what an honor to get married under such circumstances!

We’re having a “beer” and “eco-friendly” themed wedding.  We’re trying to be sustainable in pretty much everything possible–right down to the 100% recycled soda bottle ribbon that is holding together our mismatched silverware (procured from thrift stores all over, and we’re donating it once we’re done!). Our only big non-sustainable factor is travel, but if we didn’t have it in Tulsa my mother couldn’t attend, and that’s worth the eco-sacrifice in my book.

The Proposal Story

We were on a roadtrip across the northeast. We both enjoy traveling, good food and trying different beers. And Matt loves movies and Carrie is a wedding and fine art photographer–and for this story, these are important details to know! On October 12th we traveled from Matt’s grandmother’s house in Philadelphia to Mystic, Connecticut (yes, where Mystic Pizza was filmed) seeing the sights along the way (America’s Largest Clock, the Holland Tunnel, the Statue of Liberty, the World’s Largest Tooth, etc).

We got to Mystic in the evening and went to a local oyster bar for dinner, per the hotel’s recommendation. The server recommended two pubs in the area, so after dinner was over we crossed the Mystic River bridge to visit pub #1 and enjoyed a local brew.

On the way to pub #2, we had to walk across the bridge a second time, and Matt said “let’s take a picture on the bridge–we’ll use the timer on your camera.” Carrie set it to go, and while we waited on the timer, Carrie kept telling Matt to put his arm down–she thought he was giving her bunny ears or something ridiculous! It took three tries to get the light right–the pictures kept turning out too dark on the little point and shoot.

After the third picture Carrie went to check how the image turned out, and saw something white in Matt’s hand. Carrie turned around to show Matt the image and ask what he was holding, and when she did, Matt was on one knee and said “Carrie, will you marry me?” Of course she said YES!

Matt wanted to make sure to integrate Carrie’s photography into his proposal–it’s something she really loves and spends a lot of time on–and he was thrilled to see the perfect spot on their way to pub #1. Carrie is thrilled that he proposed in Mystic–she was looking forward to that stop on their roadtrip the most of all, and had chosen it because of the movie-landmark in the middle of town.

And, Carrie is overjoyed that Matt went back to purchase the ring that they had seen at the estate/antique jeweler when they went looking together–such an eco-friendly purchase and it’s extra sparkly to boot! :)

Congratulations to Matt + Carrie, and keep an eye out for their Engagement Session soon!

Josh McCullock Photography - Awesome! Go Oklahoma! The Barn is an super cool wedding spot, I love shooting there. Congrats to the couple!

{khara + tony} remix

Khara and Tony have been featured on a ton of amazing blogs this past year. If we were back in high school again, they would definitely win the “Most Adorable and Romantic” award… I don’t think we had that one… I may just have to make that one up. Haha. Well, here’s to two stars of onelove photography! Cheers to many years of happy marriage!
